Raiders first round pick Shingoose excited to be part of Hockey Town North

For 15-year-old Athens Shingoose, getting drafted into the WHL is a dream come true. They young forward was selected 16th overall by the Raiders during last week’s WHL Draft, and while he had talked with Raiders scouts throughout the year, he had no idea he would be going so high in the draft.

“I talked to Troy (Hickman), he was a great guy. He just told me everything about Prince Albert, and I was just excited when I heard my name get popped up. I was so emotional and… Holy, it was just an awesome moment for me and my family, and it was just great. I wasn’t expecting my name right there and then it just popped up and I was just so excited.”

Shingoose was a member of the the RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg team playing in the Canada Sports School Hockey League last season where he posted 31G-29A-60P in 32 games at the U15 level, and when he was called up for three games in U17 AAA he was over a goal per game with 4G-1A-5P.

When Shingoose was drafted, RHA Winnipeg had high praises for their star forward.

As for how ‘The Highlight Reel Machine’ describes his own game, his biggest asset is his desire to succeed.

“I would say I’m a very speedy player. I like to play a high speed game and I love to make my teammates better and I’m not afraid to shoot the puck and have very high compete level. I love to win.”

Shingoose won’t be coming to Prince Albert alone. He’ll be bringing his linemate and best friend Brady Filmon whom the Raiders drafted 62nd overall in the third round. Not only do the two of them play well with each other, but Shingoose and Filmon also help put in the work together off the ice as well.

“We kind of play a similar game. His ability to find me and my ability to find is just built over the season went by, and we’re just best friends off the ice. So we just talked quite a bit about hockey and how we’re going to get better with each other and then and then we watch the video with each other and then kind of build off that.”

Originally from Waywayseecapo, Manitoba, Shingoose grew up in a town that has a similar passion for hockey to that in Prince Albert. Shingoose grew up watching the Waywayseecapo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Watching those games from the stands with his uncle and former Wolverine Dave Mecas is where he started to find his passion for hockey.

“He inspired me and then we’ve been going to the games after that. It was great always cheering on the guys there. I used to have a favourite player there. His name is Landon Cochrane, he’s head coach there now, and he kind of taught me everything and so was Taylor (Thompson, assistant coach), and he’s been there on my side for so long. Sometimes he’d take me out on the ice and just teach me some new things. It’s just a great time there then. It was a fun growing up there and it’s a great, great organization.”

Since the draft, some of the young Raiders prospects expected to make it into the lineup this year like Ben Harvey and Brock Cripps have already reached out and made that connection with Shingoose, and he couldn’t be more excited to get here for camp when things start off.
